If nostalgia is defined by the “longing for how things once were,” it’s quite possible we’ll never rattle this feeling. We’re not going back to normal, but rather required to form a new one. The period of our homesickness for the pre-COVID-19 world is just as unclear as what our new future will look like. Nostalgia has always played a role in culture, but now its importance feels soaring.

Aren't you scared of the borders closing and not being able to go home?
Stressing about my friday meeting in the middle of a pyandeemeec
First beer post quaranting gonna hit different
coronavirus was a design decision
Stressed
it's really important to think about where I will feel the most happy. And that's here. and it's very nice to know that you also are here and in the same situation :)
Everything is gonna be fine. We just need to be careful and do not panic (and don't be selfish).
I'm panicking I don't want to move
Hi:) How is everyone? Join this formal zoom party on April 17th at 9pm Paris time. To celebrate the end of Faryn's birthday and the beginning of Kathy's.
I've locked myself in my room but I know that's not healthy but it's also to protect myself
Except for like the artists out there because they really just living their best lives inside their homes and are continuing to be socially aware of their impact on others
Damn miss u:(

See you soon for a canal picnic and non-stop accents
Кстати, когда летом приедешь, во дворе надо будет барбекю сделать. Мама твоя до ковида еще собиралась сделать.

I'm in New York and it's a shit show haha
I'm convinced this quarantine is what the world needs most lol
I'm actually having a great time with everyone being home and chillin in our quarantine pajamas. of course its scary and I hope everyone will get the treatment they need. but this isolated family time is much needed for all of us.
anyways, let's meet after, when this hell will be over! I really, really want to meet up<3

1: analogue algorithm
Create a set of rules that anyone can follow, which leads to an interesting conclusion. Also called pseudocode.
Example:
1: Create a new temporary storage
2: Sort all data in the dataset by date.
3: for each row in the database:
o If source = me: select text data
o append selected text to storage
4: Show storage
Filter and reorder
Use excel filters and reordering to create a new, smaller
dataset that you find interesting.
Example: show only whatsapp messages, and order them by date.
Final Algorithm Advice:
> Design an algorithm ( a set of rules)
> Create context for your algorithm
> Possibly creating an APP
>Design paintings
> The end result can be any medium
> What role does your algorithm play in the real world?
> How are you going to publish this?
Eefje
> The filled database will be explored, used and researched by students through self-created algorithms.
> Exploring a specific topic found in the database
> These topics, and their self-created algorithms= contextualise their post-corona society.
> Students will present their process, algorithm and contextualize their view on the post-corona society through their personal hotglue website. These websites is also used during the final assessments.
Final goal:
> learning to create our own data, database + algorithm
> learning how to use data, databases and algorithms as storytelling tools
> Students will learn how to use data, databases and algorithms as ways to think about a post-corona society.
THE POST-CORONA SOCIETY

Individual theory assignment
> Choose two texts written by professionals that relate to the chosen niche
> Through the Critical Reading method, analyze, compare and dissect both texts
Result:
> Text of +- 500 words in which the student introduces the discourse surrounding their project via the two different texts and concludes with their own statement
Critical Reading Method:
What a text says?
> are you able to do a restatement of the original text. Do you understnd what the text says?
What a text does ?
> Are you able to reflect on what the text does through its statement?
is it offering examples? appealing for sympathy? making a contrast to clarify a point? what is the genre of the text, essay, interview, poem, scientific, personal, diary, etc?
What a text means?
> When seeing the text as a stand alone presentation, what does it mean?
What do you make of the text when you understand what the text says and you understand how the text makes its statement?
Can you conclude that the text is: offering too few examples? Is it too biased?
Is it too practical or scientific? is it denying any other problems or possibilities?

Clouds are 9m2 by Chloe Vlahos
> a project which explores the perception and existence of the self when reduced to virtual dimensions, and the blurring line between online and offline spaces during the covid-19 pandemic.
> "inside and outside are no longer one entity of the same existence, in which we seamlessly flutter between, but rather spaces that we consciously enter and leave, signed declaration slips in hand. front doors are shut and handles wiped down and taps carefully pulled and pressed using wrists and renditions of happy birthday to you happy birthday to you happy birthday over and over until the skin between knuckles is raw and scaly. we go to sleep and repeat. happy birthday to you. hands. missed calls. tapping. dreams that sound like the noise trees make when they brush against each other on spring mornings.
as our concept of space has changed, the self has changed with it. and so we are melding the disembodied inside / outside parts of ourselves, to form something that can co-exist between the two in these unprecedented times™"

>Wellbeing/Mental Health
>Longing/Nostalgia
My initial idea for the final algorithm was focusing on one's mental health. By looking at the collective dataset it was clear to see either improvements or digressions in one's wellbeing during the times of COVID-19.
These times have personally been heavy in it's uncertainty.
One of the reasons of stress/anxiety during these times has been a certain homesickness for a familiar environment, family, friends;
It is strongly noticeable that the coronavirus lockdown has put us in reverse gear. For a while, we can indulge ourselves with a few longing glances into the past.
Our yearn for the old and comfortable is infinite at this time.
Throughout these months I found that me and the people who I have been staying in contact shared a strong bond over reminiscing over the past,
We send each other photos all the way from 2012 to 3 years ago, to videos just days before the quarantine and we would find immense comfort in going through our camera rolls.
This has been a strong way of grounding one self; whenever I feel anxious and disconnected I find myself going through messages, songs, photos, videos from the past which consequently give a moment of peace and familiarity.
This theme of nostalgia has been consistent throughout the majority of the collective data.
key words:
miss, nostalgic, want, longing, can't wait, us, before, used to, back then, remember,
Nostalgia as a coping mechanism
"Since the start of social-distancing measures in New York City, I’ve made a habit of scrolling through my Instagram profile every night, thinking about how bizarre it is that I was standing near my friends whenever I wanted to only a month ago. It already feels impossible that I used to enter bar bathrooms with abandon, look in the mirror, wipe errant makeup out of the corners of my eyes, and touch my mouth to get the wine stains off. Last week, I spent two full minutes stroking a free postcard from the pizza place I went to on Valentine’s Day. The sight of a crumpled movie-theater receipt in the bottom of my purse made me grab my knees. I’m nostalgic for February, which feels ridiculous." - writer of The Atlantic, Rose Wong.
"Nostalgia for something recent is definitely a phenomenon that predates the pandemic, says Clay Routledge, a professor of psychology at North Dakota State University who has studied the benefits of nostalgia. In studies he’s conducted with college students, they often talk about feeling nostalgia for things they did only a few months back, before they moved away from home. “Even though that was recent, it was still separation, and a connection [they] longed for,” he told me. People can also feel nostalgic for things that will eventually come back, he said, citing the example of military deployment. “You could be sent away and be like, ‘Well, I know I’m going to come home in six months or a year,’ but still have nostalgia for home.
What we’re experiencing now also qualifies as nostalgia because it has many of the traditional triggers, he said—boredom, loneliness, feelings of meaninglessness, or reminders of the reality of death, if any of those sound familiar. But the good news is that nostalgia also reinvigorates belief that life has meaning by reminding you of a time when it tangibly did. It can help you remember that there are people in your life who care about you, that you have felt better than you do now, and that you will be able to feel good again in the future."
Inspired by Vlahos' project I want to create an algorithm that would have text messages starting from the date that the lockdown started (13/03/20) with key words including:
miss, longing, nostalgic, want, old, before, remember, which would match up with archival photos from one's past.
It would be a website which also has the option of letting you upload your data including messages and images from your past, which contain the previously mentioned key words.
with this algorithm I would create a gallery of the past+present for a more hopeful future, and each image would be born anew depending on the message generated from the algorithm, giving the image a different mood.
Despite the bleakness, for many, new habits, rituals and relationships are being formed. Not all new norms are bad. Essential living is having a moment, and it’s not unlikely that we’ll be nostalgic for this time too.

This algorithm containing strangers' data text collected from the start of the quarantine period will not only serve as a reminder of what once was, but it will also show how we may indulge in it to cope today, and a glimpse into our world post-corona, when we’ll eventually look back at this time with fondness as well.
I want this project to help one remember that there are people in your life who care about you, that you have felt better than you do now, and that you will be able to feel good again in the future, post-corona.
/Algorithm Development/
In order to proceed with creating an algorithm with a specific niche of 'Nostalgia', I will have to filter and categorize the main database.
Step 1. Filter the CHANNEL to only contain Messages from WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, iMessages.
Step 2. Categorizing the DATA TEXT into emotional / non-emotional data.
Step 3. Filter DATA TEXT to messages that contain key words: miss, longing, old, back then, remember, can't wait, missing, nostalgic;
Nostalgia as a coping mechanism
